The school of SBS is facilitated with state of art tools and techniques for basic and advanced research in various domains of biological science. Departments of SBS are also operating certain instruments from the Sophisticated Instrumentation Facility of the University. Students of SBS have been regularly qualifying the national level exams such as UGC/CSIR JRF, NET, and LS. The departments of SBS have been actively engaged in organizing national and international seminars and conferences. The SBS is a leading school of the university in research and development together with teaching. School of Biological Sciences (SBS) includes four teaching departments:
The Botany and Zoology departments were established with the inception of the University in 1946. Botany department has been recognized as centre of excellence by the state government and a centre of higher learning in Plant Sciences by UGC as DRS, DSA and SAP. Botanic Garden of the department is recognized by Botanic Garden Conservation International, Kew (UK). The department is now very well known for the excellent research contributions made in the field of Plant–Pathology, Microbiology and Ecology. The emerging areas for research and teaching presently involve molecular carcinogenesis, immunology & cell signalling, bone biology, fish biology, entomology, environmental biotechnology and vermibiotechnology. The Zoological museum of the department is an excellent collection of vast variety of animals. Department of Microbiology was established in 1996. With the establishment of central university in 2009, the department was renamed as Department of Microbiology. Recently, laboratories of bioimaging, infection and immunity and hostpathogen interaction have been established. The major research fields encompass microbial glycosidases, Lasparaginase, thermophilic fungi, mycobacteria, enteric bacteria, zebra fish, biofilm, cancer and biosensors. Department of Biotechnology acquired an independent status in 2001. With an inclination towards inter disciplinary research; faculty members in the department have forged active national & international collaborations. The department’s current research areas include plant biotechnology with focus on development of transgenic plants, cancer biology with emphasis on nanovaccines and ion channel physiology.
