Brief Introduction of the Department
Year of Establishment: 1981
Post graduate teaching of Sociology was initially started combined with the Department of Anthropology in the year 1965 under Professor S.C. Dube. By the recommendations of the U.G.C. review committee, Undergraduate teaching of Sociology was started in 1975. The University established Independent Department of Sociology and Social Work in 1981. The Department endorses an interdisciplinary approaches keeping in the view of blending of Applied Sociology with a strong foundation of Basic/theoretical Sociology.
Vision and Mission of the Department
The Department follows skilled based teaching and learning in which students are given opportunity to participate actively in both theoretical and practical aspects of academic learning process with the blending knowledge of sociology and social work. The Department encourages a system of Group Learning by forming small groups of students in each semester to develop sociological perspectives among them towards the contemporary issues and problems relating to regional, national and international level.
Thrust areas: ‘Social structure, Indian Tradition and Culture, Women and Development, Change and Continuity in Indian society in particular and South Asia in general’
Master in Social Work:
The MSW programme was started in the Department from 2014-15 academic session. The vision of the Department for MSW programme is to make a coherence academic teaching, research, and learning bond between the core sociological insights with fruit-full action based teaching and research where students are not only treats as trainer for social work but also a learner from society.
Achievement of the Department
Community College was running in the Department from 2015-16 to 2017-18. The Department has organized Research Methodology course for Ph.D. students and Capacity Building programmes for faculty sponsored by ICSSR, New Delhi. Faculty of the Department has visited different universities and institutions within the country and abroad to discuss and present their research based academic knowledge in different platforms.

Recognized Contribution
The Department has actively contributed its research based academic knowledge in Sansad Adarsh Gram Yozna, conducted various social awakening programmes under different banners. Four days training and counselling programmes for the family councilors in Madhya Pradesh was jointly organised by the Department with Central Social Welfare Board, New Delhi. Conducted workshop collaboration with Centre for Social Research, New Delhi. Faculties of the Department are actively engaged and contributing their sociological knowledge in various schemes and programmes such as Unnat Bharat Yozna, Adarsh Gram Yozna, and Kaushal Vikash Mission.
